Art and Design at Crockham Hill:
Subject Leader: Mrs S Gibson
Vision:
‘Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas and themselves, and to explore what is possible.’
MaryAnn F. Kohl, American educator and author
At Crockham Hill, we believe that art and design is a vital part of children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our aim is to inspire, engage and challenge children’s creativity in order to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills they require to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
We believe that art can take our children on a really exciting adventure, where they are given the freedom to explore a wide range of materials, skills and ideas. Sketchbooks are at the heart of our art and design curriculum. They are used from Y1 through to Year 6 as a place to experiment, explore and unlock creative possibilities. Reception work is photographed, available on Seesaw, and taken home. We encourage children to explore subject matter in their own way, with no ‘set rules’ for outcomes. This approach helps build children’s confidence and ‘learn to trust their ideas and explore what is possible’. The process of exploring art - whether that be a particular technique, artist or subject matter - is so important and unique for each child. Their sketchbook provides them with an opportunity to respond creatively and record their individual creative journey, including reflective annotations.
Art and Design encourages creativity, confidence and curiosity. Children are encouraged to 'have a go', experiment with ideas and materials, and understand that there is no right or wrong outcome. We value the creative process and support children to express themselves and enjoy learning through art.
