Remembrance and Black History - Walter Tull

For our first day back this term, the whole school came together to explore the theme of Remembrance and Black History. We focused on the incredible life of Walter Tull – one of the first Black professional footballers and among the first Black officers to serve in the British Army during the First World War. A true pioneer, Walter Tull overcame immense challenges, including losing his parents at a young age and facing relentless racial discrimination. Yet, through courage and determination, he achieved extraordinary success. More than a century after his death, his legacy has inspired all of the children in our school this week with his story of perseverance and resilience.
From reception to Year 6, children have spent time researching Walter's life and creating fact files and biographies. Learning about racial prejudice and how we can be allies against racism. And they have also produced stunning artwork: pencil portraits, remembrance wreaths and Georgia O'Keefe style poppies.
What an amazing day of learning!
