Our School Dog

Rosie is a lovely Springador (a Springer Spaniel crossed with a Labrador) who was born on 6th June 2020. She lives at home with Mrs Taylor and comes into school every day except Tuesdays. Rosie has her own safe and quiet space in the Headteacher’s office, where she can relax and feel happy and secure throughout the day.

The children really enjoy spending time with Rosie, whether that’s seeing her on walks around the playground or helping to look after her during the school day. They love seeing her around school and have learnt how to care for her respectfully, giving her the space she needs while also feeling confident to say hello or gently stroke her when they meet her.

Rosie has been trained by The Dog Mentor. She received comprehensive training and behaviour analysis before being a certified working therapy dog. The benefits of spending time with a dog to calm and regulate are well researched and Rosie plays a vital role in helping children feel safe, communicate any worries or concerns and to regulate when they are feeling wobbly.

All children at our school may have contact with Rosie unless a parent or carer informs us otherwise in writing. We know how beneficial a school dog can be in helping children build confidence, responsibility and positive relationships. Some guidance on how to interact with Rosie is at the bottom of this page.

For children who may feel a little unsure around dogs, we offer gentle opportunities to meet Rosie and become comfortable with her at their own pace. New children in Acorns are introduced to Rosie early in September to help them settle in and get to know her.
