YR Acorn Class

Welcome to Acorn Class!

Acorn Class is our first class.

It has twenty Year R pupils and the youngest 10 Y1s join us for two afternoons a week. This class is taught by Mrs Gray (Monday and Tuesday) and Mrs Lakin-Hall (Wednesday-Friday).  We also have Mrs Johnson (Full time TA) in our class to help support the children with their learning.

Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and we share our coverage in a learning Journey for each term. These and our Long Term Plan for learning across the year are added to our class page below.

Phonics and Reading

We teach phonics in the Early Years through ‘Little Wandle’ using a synthetic phonics approach. We add phonemes learned on to a key ring which is taken home daily to practice.

We use 'PhonicsPlay' online as a useful resource of games and activities to develop skills.

We use Big Cat Phases 2, 3 and 4 levelled texts for reading practice and to take home. One text will go home each week, with the expectation that it is read and re-read until absolutely fluent and comprehension is developed.

In addition, we have a wide selection of books in our reading area for children to enjoy in class and to take home to share with family on a daily basis. It is not expected that the children will read these to the adult, but that the adult will read to the child, encouraging them to join in repetitive phrasing, or predicting words in a sentence.

Home Learning

If your child has to self-isolate, it is expected that children at home will complete their learning as set by teachers.

Please go to your child's Online Learning Platform 'Seesaw' to access a range of personalised, allocated  activities.
